Music Therapy

And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him. (1 Sam 16:23)

Saul strayed further and further away from the Lord.

A distressing spirit tormented him.

He called for a man to play music before him so that he might get well.

David came into his service.

Whenever he played the lyre, Saul was refreshed and the spirit left him.

One can tell the morals of a man by the music he listens to.

Music can affect the mind, positively or negatively.

Song lyrics communicate values, worldviews, philosophies, paradigms that shape one’s thinking and behavior.

Songs that contain elements aligned with Biblical teachings can edify and lift up the spirit.

David’s music brought relief to Saul.

David, being a godly man, having all the material for the writing of the Psalms in him while he was still young, played songs that communicate the fear of the Lord.

The Lord is with him (David) (v 18).

David was not just playing music, but godly music, something akin to the Psalms he would write later.  It had a spiritual, supernatural effect on Saul.

Godly music is powerful to drive out distressing spirits.

We must therefore, exercise wisdom and discernment in choosing the type of music we listen to.

Ultimately, the best music is praise for the Lord.

Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  Make a melody in your heart to the Lord (Eph Eph 5:19; Col 3:16).

Start singing godly songs today.  It is refreshing for your soul.  Rejoice in the Lord!
